What do I need to know about estate planning?

Estate planning is a notoriously complex landscape. We recently polled the Long Angle community to identify their biggest questions.

Two-thirds of respondents want to understand the tactical mechanics of specific trust structures. Over half expressed interest in balancing plan optimization with liquidity, or maintaining control within an irrevocable trust.

We’ll be tackling these questions through educational resources in the coming months. For now, here’s a quick primer on the vehicles mentioned in the number one answer:

GRAT (Grantor Retained Annuity Trust): Shifts future appreciation of high-growth assets to heirs with minimal gift-tax impact; ideal for those expecting a significant liquidity event or rapid asset growth.

SLAT (Spousal Lifetime Access Trust): Removes assets from your taxable estate while still allowing your spouse to access the funds, providing a unique balance of tax efficiency and financial security.

DAPT (Domestic Asset Protection Trust): Shields assets from potential creditors; a go-to for professionals in high-risk industries seeking long-term wealth preservation.

CRUT (Charitable Remainder Unitrust): Allows you to donate to charity, receive an immediate tax deduction, and retain an income stream for life.

How do I help my teen choose the best college for them?

Choosing a college is one of the most important decisions a student will make, and it can often feel overwhelming.

By breaking the process into five clear steps, parents can help students approach the decision with confidence and clarity:

  1. Start with academic fit

  2. Consider location and campus environment

  3. Evaluate financial considerations early

  4. Think about cultural and personal fit

  5. Use summer experiences to clarify the choice

Students who participate in structured summer programs are better prepared to articulate their interests, evaluate college options, and envision themselves in a collegiate setting.

The National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) pre-college programs allow students to explore academic subjects and experience campus life with peers.

From Marketing & Public Relations at Columbia University to Marine Biology at UC Berkeley, NSLC’s 34 programs across 12 prestigious universities empower students to make educated decisions about their future.

Private Market Perspectives

Why is due diligence so important in private markets?

In private markets, due diligence is critical to optimizing for performance and mitigating risks. Why? Manager dispersion.

Unlike public equities where performance is relatively clustered, the gap between a 25th percentile and 75th percentile private equity manager can be as wide as 15%.

Standardized reporting doesn't exist, so rigorous underwriting is the only way to distinguish genuine skill from market luck.

Long Angle navigates this landscape using five core underwriting pillars. These pillars ensure GPs have "skin in the game" and a proprietary "right to win" within their market.

Diligence must also adapt to asset class nuances. For example, while private equity underwriting may focus on attribution analysis of fund performance, private credit may focus on deal structures, covenants, and downside protection.

Ultimately, institutional-grade rigor is what separates investing from speculating.
